Pure Soul had the pleasure of being invited to the annual Untapped Fashion and Music Show, the fifth of its kind, held at the ever-classy Grace Hotel. Now as a first time visitor to an Untapped event, I’ll start by saying I will be going to the next one. A very appropriate venue, not too big you become tired from walking across the hall, not too small that you’ll literally step on toes with each step. An eclectically beautiful crowd, smart, ambitious, and energetic from the moment you enter. There were designers from all over the city to all over the world in attendance and we were honored to be apart of the experience.
For starters I would say that describing the event as a “show” is slightly misleading. Make no mistake; there was entertainment the entire night in the form of DJ Yoshi’s excellent taste in music selection as a backdrop for conversation. The evening was even closed with a live performance by up and coming artists Victoria Martini and Big Bang. Still, the real show was mostly rooted in the interaction between the entire body of people. A few booths were set up with hand made jewelry and accessories such as the Glam Rok Designs collection designed by Irene. A unique collection of imported stones from places far as Thailand designed and assembled into bracelets, chains and rings. Inspired by a Greek background, the color tones combined with the light striking the gems created a dazzling effect on the lovely models wearing them. It was one of the many eye catchers carefully positioned as you entered the room.
As we walked around and mingled with the designers one couldn’t help but get a slight feeling of shopping for fruit in a town market. Each vendor’s idea more fresh than the last, each material used to make the design imported from a place farther than the last. The one thing to be said of all is that each design was original, exciting and bold. Junkprints designer and Brooklyn native Chanel makes clothing and accessories which are meant to stand out. Mitts with spikes, baggy pants and shirts trimmed with intricate designs. Those modeling her fashions were unmistakable and all seemed very empowered in doing so. They had a style that was their own: fun as well as fierce, serious as well as sexy.
Although this was a “winter wonderland” themed event, there was still a forecast as to what trends the spring season is sure to usher in. Dresses and gowns made out of fabric light enough to feel comfortable and breathable, some even convertible as they go from long sleeves to sleeveless low cut with the untying of a knot. The models who donned the fashions of the Wadada Movement seemed to carry themselves as royalty, not of condescending monarchs but graceful worldly ones. Sisters, designers and founders of the Wadada (Love) Movement, Ayana and Asha Diaz, were also amongst the models and certainly reflected their passion for their clothing. Natives to Trinidad & Tobago, their dresses were lined with beautiful patterns as well as their accessories. Elegance without conformity, these ladies were just a few of the many vital offerings to the buffet of creative and sharp style.
The Untapped Fashion & Music show has placed itself on a path to longevity and limitless possibilities. Although Grace Hotel’s layout put us in close proximity to two bars we found it of no consequence as the energy in the room was intoxicating enough. The lovely Jordana, the PR responsible for putting the event together, has put forth a vision which is clear and promising. All in attendance left with an enlightened and enriched feeling that this is a tap far from running dry.
