Veteran singer/songwriter/musician/producer Donell Jones is back to his usual hit-making self with the release of his sixth studio album DONELL JONES FOREVER. While R&B has evolved sonically over the past decade, Jones has consistently put out quality, timeless music through organically live instrumentation, and again does not disappoint with his latest effort, which contains the hit singles ‘Forever,’ ‘Beautiful’ and ‘Sorry Just Wasn’t Enough.’ DONELL JONES FOREVER was phenomenally crafted largely in part because of the love and happiness that is currently taking place in all facets of his life – especially on the relationship end of things with his new fiancee. ‘My album is all about life, love and music. It’s an expression of where I’m at in my life right now.’ Jones says.
We at PURE SOUL MAGAZINE caught up with the mega-talented Chicago, Illinois native for a brief Q&A.
PSM: You’re been in the music business for a little over two decades to this point. How incredible has the journey been from your perspective?
DJ: It’s been phenomenal. I’ve had my ups and downs, but the ‘downs’ have made me who I am today, and I wouldn’t change anything. I just appreciate the fact that I’m still around and relevant in the game. I love the art of music, and that’s why I’m still here!
PSM: What keeps you consistent in putting out good quality music on a regular basis?
DJ: I think it has a lot to do with my work ethic. I really enjoy the art of making music, and to me, it’s like I’m still learning the craft. I’m always trying to find new ways to create new music by learning from the legends and incorporate what they did into what I do today.
PSM: In five-to-ten years from now with God’s will, Donell Jones will be –
DJ: Continuing to be a household name in the world of R&B/Soul music. I definitely want to venture out into possibly owning my own line of hats, and maybe some acting. But mainly, I’ll still be at it musically because that’s my first and forever love!
PSM: Other than you, which artists – living or deceased – best fits the bill as being of PURE SOUL?
DJ: Michael Jackson, Stevie Wonder and Teddy Pendergrass.
