Paula Renee Joseph, aka “Karma”, brings her unique blend of R&B/Soul with Hip Hop extraction to the forefront here in the year of 2K13 with the release of her new album ‘The Good Karma Project’ PURE SOUL MAGAZINE recently caught up with the talented and beautiful Ms. Karma for a brief Q&A session.
PSM: In three words, define the KARMA brand.
Karma: ‘Feel Good’ music.
PSM: What can fans of good, quality music expect from from your most recent full-length release ‘The Good Karma Project,’ and what are your feelings on the album from a personal perspective?
Karma: The fans can expect to hear a full and complete story from ‘The Good Karma Project.’ I take them on a journey from start to finish with musical chapters of me taking a stance on life, looking/finding/losing love, and then my declaration to move forward. From a personal perspective, I feel like it’s a real introduction into who I am and all that I can do, from songwriting to producing and arranging.
PSM: What sets you apart from the current crop of female R&B artists that are out there?
Karma: I think what sets me apart is my ability to not only sing and perform, but also build a song from scratch and mold it from start to finish. I try to paint pictures, tell stories and educate through my work. I consider myself an ‘edu-tainer!’
PSM: Which recording artists and producers do you visualize collaborating with, based on your unique style?
Karma: I would love to collaborate with Drake, not only on a song, but maybe behind the scenes with songwriting as well. I would also love a chance to work with Rico Love and Rodney Jerkins.
PSM: Besides your music, what other ventures do you have going on at the moment?
Karma: I am currently working on launching my own production company tentatively called ‘Good Karma Entertainment.’ I would like to give a platform for other artists through artist development, mentoring and training. Besides that, I am an all-around entertainer, so you can catch me doing a little modeling and acting here and there when I’m not working with children as an educator.
PSM: What’s the best advice you’ve received thus far about today’s music industry?
Karma: The best advice I received in this industry was to take the time to really learn the business. It’s so easy to get swept into the fairy-tale idea of the music industry, but it’s important to know and understand what goes on behind the scenes to generate these images and visuals we know and love.
PSM: For a musically talented young lady going through the daily struggle and has aspirations to be a future success – what words of encouragement would you pass along to her?
Karma: To stay focused and let everything they experience – good and bad – motivate them. What doesn’t kill you makes a great song, so don’t run from your struggles. It’s also equally important to develop other skills, whether it’s songwriting, producing, dancing, etc.; something that can add value to your artistry.
PSM: What is PURE SOUL to Karma?
Karma: PURE SOUL to me is allowing the beauty and light that you were born with shine through every single thing you do. PURE SOUL to me is being true to who you are, and making no apologies for your existence. PURE SOUL is just being YOU!
PSM: In five-to-ten years from now with God’s will, Karma will be –
Karma: Performing at the Grammys after accepting my award(s). I will be an artist that everyone knows and loves!
